As of Q4 2021, Egypt had a total cell phone penetration of c. 98% of the population which is around 100 million people. Approximately 62 million people are mobile internet subscribers (smart phones) with the remaining population using feature phones. The online space for the sale of new phones in Egypt is dominated by the 3 big e-commerce marketplaces along with some traditional retailers offering online purchases and the telecom operators. The secondary market for used phones online is highly fragmented and lacks trust and is currently dominated by the marketplaces of social media platforms and Egypt’s biggest classified portal. There is a tremendous need for bringing traditional e-commerce services (warranty, shipping, return policy) to the space coupled with other assisting services that would make it easy and transparent to buy a used phone online. Given the continuous rise in the price of new phones, coupled with the Covid19 pandemic, e-commerce will continue to show strong growth in Egypt and the demand for used phones will continue to rise exponentially.
